埃及文明的繼承者～紙草

紙草，生長在尼羅河畔

PAPYRA, throned upon the banks of Nile,

伸展著她那光滑的枝葉，揮動她那銀色的身段

Spread her smooth leaf, and waved her silver style.

—歷史悠久的金字塔，月桂色的半身雕像

—The storied pyramid, the laurel’d bust,

凱旋門已碎為塵埃

The trophy’d arch had crumbled into dust;

神聖的象徵和史詩歌曲

The sacred symbol, and the epic song,

(不知道其文字，忘記了其語言)

(Unknown the character, forgot the tongue,)

與每一個未被征服的首領或青年聖徒一起

With each unconquer’d chief, or fainted maid,

悄無聲息地沉入忘卻的深淵

Sunk undistinguish’d in Oblivion’s shade.

守護神與零亂的殘骸在一起，這令人心痛不已

Sado’er the scatter’d ruins Genius sigh’d,

而尚處幼年的文藝，因表達不清而滅亡

And infant Arts but learn’d to lisp and died.

直到步入神奇的王國—紙草，才啟發人們

Till to astonish’d realms PAPYRA taught

用神秘的色調描繪聲音和思想

With Wisdom’s voice to print the page sublime,

用硬石銘記時代的步伐

      這是達爾文的祖父～伊拉斯謨斯‧達爾文 Erasmus Darwin（1731–1802）所著的「The botanic garden Comprises two volumes, The Economy of Vegetation (1792 )and The Loves of the Plants (first published 1789)」其中所刊載的詩。博物學者在面對紙草時，所聯想的是一段失落文明的記憶。昨天我在林春吉兄的園內，面對一大叢紙草，不由得想起在一本書中看到這段文字，書中只有中譯，重新打一下，並且花了功夫找到原文，原譯者翻譯的應該Ok，不好的話莫責怪，我英文只有考2、30分，偶爾裝一下文藝青年就不要為難我了。
